Noah's Temptation

We have a new Hydrangea Bush to put in this year. I am still waiting to figure out exactly where I want it and our little Noah, who is 4, has been very taken with it. He asks me quite often if he can pick some flowers from it. He is always loitering around it out in the back yard, studying it and commenting on it design. I continue to gently tell him no and that if we pick them, we won't be able to watch them grow each day.

But this afternoon, all of the sudden Noah comes in the back door just sobbing, all upset, hardly able to get the words out. Yep, you guessed it- Temptation had gotten the better of him. He had picked some- and the girls' had been nice enough to remind him of how much trouble he was going to be in-thus the sobbing. But when I saw him and how incredibly upset he was, I couldn't help but feel his pain. There are some tears that are shed because of the trouble and consequence that is going to befall them and then there is the tears that come because they are truly sorry and are distraught over what they did, that is what Noah was feeling. I could hardly blame him, they are quite entrancing and are just begging to be picked. So, he handed me the flowers with those tears rolling down his cheeks and we went to the kitchen so I could show him how we could enjoy them for a few days. I must say, I do like having them to enjoy inside.

Fun with Scraps...

Every so often I enjoy going through all the favorite little scraps that have collected from previous projects. I put them together for a quilt this time. They end up being eye candy when mushed together. I used a sweet vintage yellow and white stripe bed linen rescue to compliment the scraps. Last night when all the kiddos were fast asleep, I was able to finally finish binding this quilt. And then I snuck out into the backyard around 6am this morning to photograph it.

I did a free motion wandering stitch on the color patches and a simple straight line stitch on the yellow and white stripes. Reminds me of a bubble gum machine.

A Little Indoor Gardening...

I am still on some not so fun medication for my back-so I have had a week of feeling very unproductive! I cannot remember the last time I took this many naps! And it seems as though everything falls into 2 categories-too painful or too drowsy;). I was thankful for the fact that Matt had different things going on this weekend that the kids could be involved in. The last thing I want is for them to stay couped up with me. But this afternoon, I worked up enough motivation to finish binding 2 of the quilts I had shown earlier. And since I am a bit antsy about the fact that gardening season has begun and I have not been able to tackle much of that as of yet, some indoor gardening(quilting) was appreciated. Both of these baby quilts have beautiful vibrant floral patterns in them.

The majority of the fabrics used in these quilts were from reclaimed bed linens. I did cheat a bit and complimented some of these fabrics with some lovely modern quilting fabrics as well. I just couldn't resist how well the new and old blended.

To Keep My Mind Occupied...

Last week, while cleaning and preparing to begin working outside, I injured my back. I honestly could not even tell the doctor what I was doing when it happened, it just kind of snuck up on me last Tuesday and Wednesday. At first I could not even pinpoint what it was exactly because the pain was making me so nauseous, I almost thought I was sick. But gradually the pain set in on one area and it was quite evident I had pulled something in my back. Up until this morning I have been attempting to just get through the pain while taking it easy, but this morning I woke up and there was no waiting until even tomorrow for my Drs appointment. Hopefully after today I will begin to heal(quickly). So, in the down times, when I could manage to sit for awhile, I have put some more love into the rug I began last week. I added a raspberry layer to it. I took the afternoon off of teaching since the medicine I am on makes me feel like I am moving in slow motion. I was able to sit outside while the kids played in the sunshine, and braided at least a few rounds for the circle.

A Good Mother's Day Weekend...

Mother's day is typically the first time I really venture outdoors to begin the gardening season. This year I was not feeling quite ready for the challenge of both indoors and outdoors, but spending the time outside this weekend cured the hesitancy in me! What a glorious time I was able to spend with my family! We grilled almost every meal-had Mom and Dad over on Sunday, and spent all day today preparing the yard and gardens. The first was major job to tackle was taking down one of our apple trees-sniff sniff. It is beautiful, but over the years the wasps have gotten more and more vicious with the kiddos. By the end of the season last year, not a day went by without a bee sting. The apples were not edible, so we decided sadly, that it wasn't serving much of a purpose. We have plans for planting new trees, but for now we will be clearing that spot for our pool. I spent the early evening hours in a magical garden hideaway with the kids. We built it from the tree branches we cut down. I have an old swing set frame in my main garden that we used to prop the cut branches on. They won't stay there for long, we will be planting the garden soon and the branches of course will not stay looking so magical for long, but the girls especially, found this idea inspiring. I think school under the branches tomorrow will be in order. We also were able to build a new box for transplanting our raspberries across the yard. Hoping the transplant goes well for the years to come! Raspberries everyday it one of summer's best gifts!! Here are just some fun pictures of our day today...

Planned for Years...

Years this has been brewing in that creative part of my brain. Years I have been patiently gathering shades of lovely color. Years I have been fighting the impulse to begin too soon when I peered at my shelves of magical color. But this weekend....it was time to begin. Here are glimpses of a peaceful work of hands. Worked on while waiting for precious friends to arrive, worked on after they left this morning giving me a chance to ponder all they had shared about the new adventure they were embarking on, and worked on after a good afternoon of yard work while I sat and watched my kiddos play under the sun. Just small snips of time, but each filling this rug with warm memories. I hope to finish this within a year, but I will not rush, I will simply enjoy and hope that it will become an heirloom.
